This chapter explores interoception: the processing of internal bodily signals that influence our way of perceiving and reasoning about the world and ourselves. We will see how the communication between the brain and other organs such as the heart and stomach modulate the perception of stimuli and impact our mental health. We emphasize the influence of breathing in the optimization of cognitive resources and the interaction of active perception with interoceptive signals. Finally, we highlight the fundamental role of interoception in the modulation of human cognition, opening opportunities for research and treatment in psychological and neurological disorders.
